Wine Tasting Membrership Event Succeeds at Company Shops Market

Animal lovers united last Friday, May 4th, as the Humane Society of Alamance County had their Wine Tasting and Membership Event at Company Shops Market, Burlington's Food Co-op. The weather was perfect for an outdoors event on a beautiful Spring evening on Front Street in downtown Burlington.

Graymatter performed for a large crowd on the patio and a splendid time was had by all. Special canine guests made the event extra memorable!

Thanks to all current members and to the new members who joined the worthy and noble effort to improve animal welfare in Alamance County through HSAC's many vital programs.

It's a Smell World After All

"Dogs seem to stick their heads out of moving cars almost any chance they get" writes Matt Soniak for Mental Floss. "What’s so great about a wind-whipped snout?"

It's a whirlwind world of smells for these two Irish Setters.

Soniak continues "...the window’s main draw isn’t the scenery or the breeze. What dogs are after are smells. As air moves over the olfactory membrane, odor molecules settle on the scent receptors and get recognized. The more air there is flowing over the membrane, the more scents the dogs can detect."

Read the full text here. --brought to you by mental_floss!

Apparently, dogs have about 45 times the number of olfactory sensors as humans. I guess if you had a nose with the power of 45 noses, you'd stick your head out of the window of a moving car too!

But be alert to the dangers your dog faces. Eye injury and the risk of dogs leaping or falling out of a moving vehicle are very real problems. We'll have more fascinating information and stories on this subject in an upcoming newsletter, so stay tuned for that!

Adoptable Cats Update: Meet Reggie

Once again our dorms are full with six cats at our cat adoption center at PetSmart near Target in Burlington. Come by any day of the week to see these six adorable and adoptable cats: Reggie, Jack, Victor, Sarah, Peekaboo and Claudia! Our latest edition is young Reggie, a beautiful nine-month-old orange tabby boy with a quiet and sweet disposition. Brothers Jack and Victor are highly affectionate and agreeable solid black cuddle bombs. Sarah and Peekaboo, our two female adults are both front-declawed. All five adults are spayed or neutered. Our kitten, Claudia is playful and ready to start a new life in a happy home. Claudia is on track for a free spay through HSAC when she reaches six months of age. All have a clean bill of health and are up-to-date on age-appropriate Rabies and FVRCP vaccines and have tested negative for Feline Leukemia and Feline Aids. All six cats are adorable and ready for your love.

Tom and Shadow find Loving Homes

Here is an update on HSAC pet adoptions.

Gorgeous little Tom went home with the most wonderful family. See the photo below of the young girl, Wren with her parent with her new kitten. The family is in love!

Tom the kitten and his new adoring family.

Also, Shadow went home to a very nice father and son household. There was a real hug-fest going on not only during the initial visit but also at the adoption. The two men filled a cart with all kinds of new cat gear before they left and when it was time to go Shadow marched right into the carrier and settled in. It's a great match.

Shadow has been adopted too, after winning the hearts of a father and son.
